Good News! Senior Center Switches to Reusables

Susan Russell

Eliminating waste from 50-90 daily luncheons adds up to a LOT!  13,000 to 27,000 place settings per year; the Senior Center serves lunch about 260 days annually.

From styrofoam to throw-away plastic to plastic coated paper, now the Town of Aurora Senior Center is starting 2025 with a plan to reduce waste while improving the dining experience. Several years ago they successfully eliminated disposable drinkware in favor of reusable mugs and cups. If you've had a meeting at the Center you may have noticed these are also available for visitors. And since the Rotary Club donated a water-fill station a few years ago, there have been more than 1500 uses, saving residents money and keeping many one-use plastic bottles out of the landfill.

There will be an immediate reduction in the daily waste going out with the garbage as well as savings on the purchase of disposables. Statistics show that the break-even cost of reusable vs disposable dishware will be reached in no more than a few months. Diners will no longer put the entire contents of their trays into the trash. This will require a change to procedures after a meal, and additional dishwashing for the kitchen staff. Nevertheless, Nutrition Coordinator Jennifer George is enthused about the changes, and anticipates a more enjoyable meal experience compared to eating with disposable plates and silverware.

Director Donna Bodekor and other senior center directors suggested purchasing reusable dining ware with funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Erie County was able to use ARPA for the new dishes and silverware, as well as a new dishwasher, steam table, and several years worth of dishwashing soap. Seniors over the age of 60 and their spouses can call to reserve a spot for lunch. Nutritious hot meals are available every weekday, and the suggested donation is only $3.50.

This is definitely a win not only for the environment, but for everyone enjoying the great meals at the Senior Center!
